For primary school children and ideal to run in tandem with other SPHE safety topics, the AgriKids Farm Safety Day, encourages either an all school (recommended) or class only approach to farm safety education in primary schools. This activity comes with the incentive of being an AgriKids Farm Safety Ambassador Flag programme and a qualifier for the AgriKids Farm Safety Ambassador Awards. Choose from one of 3 themes to earn a Pennant, collect all 3 and you can collect your flag! On completion we will send you your pennant and a certificate to celebrate your achievement.

About the Programme

Objective

From September to November 30th 2025 this pilot farm safety programmes is supported by Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine

An all school or class only approach to farm safety education where pupils can engage in a series of diverse activities that will appeal to all age groups, encourage the inclusion of the wider community and support teachers in delivering on their curriculum requirements.

Earning your Flag Status

This activity comes with the incentive of being an AgriKids Farm Safety Ambassador Flag programme. Schools choose from one of 3 themes to earn a Pennant.

Only on completion of all three themed activities and collection of all three Pennants, will successful schools earn an AgriKids Farm Safety Ambassador Flag.

At the end of the day participants will be asked to make their ‘AgriKids Farm Safe Promise’ – this is a pledge that creates the sense of empowerment from the day’s series of activities and to create a duty of care to be farm safe and to stay farm safe. A key deliverable is engaging and collaborating with outside organisations and speakers to assist with the delivery of the themes over the day.

AgriKids Ambassador Awards

The AgriKids Ambassador Awards recognise those exceptional students, teachers and learning initiatives which contgriubuted to a successful farm safety learning experience.

With great prizes up for grabs, any prize money won by a school is to be re-invested into the welfare and wellbeing of the school and its pupils. E.g. School garden; hardware; sports equipment; art supplies, etc. Winning schools will be followed up with to obtain an update on how their prize fund was spent and its impact.

The AgriKids Ambassador Awards will be as follows:

1. AgriKids Farm Safety Day:

• Best School - €1000

• Best Class - €500

2. Best learning initiative:

• 2 x €500 (school nominations). Winning initiatives will be credited and added to the AgriKids Farm Safety Ambassador

CHOOSE A THEME

You may want to focus on a specific area for the theme of your day or run a general theme encompassing as much learning as possible. Some ideas could be;

Set up your activities

DISPLAY FARM SAFETY CREATIVITY FOR ALL

Display farm safety themed ard around the school corridors, halls classrooms, etc. These generate a great sense of whole school learning and participation and also the opportunity for parents to see the work. TIP: why not offer the posters to retail or agri business premises in your area. This places the children in a position of influence and adheres to the AgriKids Engage, Educate and Empower ethos.

To earn certification, you will need to submit evidence of your work. You can submit it via the options below. Once reviewed you will receive your certification.  DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS is November 21st 2025

Suggested Activities to help you run your AgriKids Farm Safe Week

AFSW Day 1 - Farmyard Safety - Suggested Activities

  • Download, colour in and hang up the farm safety signs.
  • Design a farm safety checklist to use on a farm visit.
  • Create a model farm in the classroom.
  • Assign safety signage to each hazardous area
  • Invite a speaker to talk about safety with electricity.
  • Write your own farm safety short story
  • Create a ‘farmyard’ and assign safety signage.
  • Visit the AgriKids’ ‘Gamezone’ for touch screen games
  • Story Time: The Tree Swing (Tales from Riverside Farm).

AFSW Day 2 - Tractor & Machinery Safety - Suggested Activities

  • Discuss the tractor safety checklist in the workbooks.
  • Invite a road safety expert (eg. police) to talk about road safety.
  • Carry out a class survey on 'Favourite tractors'
  • Play the ‘Off to Work’ on the AgriKids.ie ‘Gamezone’
  • Carry out the lesson plan ideas above.
  • Create a safety booklet for  machinery & farm vehicles.
  • Do a project on your favourite farm machinery and present to the class.
  • Invite farm machinery expert / farmer to show the PTO.
  • Show the PTO safety videos / demos.
  • Run a poll to see which tractor brand is the class favourite.

AFSW Day 3 - Animal Safety & Wellbeing - Suggested Activities

  • Complete the workbook activities.
  • Make animal masks and act their behaviours.
  • Create a mural in class on different farm animals.
  • Use a toy horse to ask the children about 'blind spots'
  • Invite a  vet to talk about being safe around animals.
  • Interview a local farmer about their animals.
  • Invite a health care speaker to talk about Zoonosis.
  • Discuss the 'Spot the Dangers' worksheet above.
  • Create your own worksheet for younger classes.
  • Run a fundraiser for a local animal sanctuary.
  • Interview a vet / farm animal specialist & create a report on animal safety and wellbeing.
  • Present to your class on your favourite farm animal.
  • Research how farm animals are used on our farms and how farmers stay safe when working with them.

AFSW Day 4 - Slurry, Chemical & Water Safety - Suggested Activities

  • Carry out the activities in the workbook.
  • List all the areas on a farm with a water hazard.
  • Using a fizzy drink talk about the slurry agitation process.
  • Invite a water safety expert to talk about water safety.
  • Identify how water is used on farms and what must be done to stay safe.
  • Carry out the fermentation experiment.
  • Invite a farming professional to talk about safe slurry agitation & equipment used – mask, etc.

AFSW Day 5 - Farm Work & Wellbeing- Suggested Activities

  • Create a wall chart of farm work for each season.
  • Take a look and learn about machinery used in olden times.
  • Have a yoga class or practice some meditation.
  • Visit a food producer & learn about agri-food business.
  • Create your own vegetable garden.
  • Visit or arrange a visit to an alternative farmer in your area.
  • Speak to a professional on diet, wellness and mediation.
  • Create colourful pictures to brighten up your classroom.
  • Invite a dietician or healthcare worker to talk about self care, hygiene and protecting your skin.
  • Visit a local food producer.
  • Create your own vegetable garden .
  • Visit a ‘Farmers Market’ and create a log of foods you see.
  • Create farm safety posters to decorate your school hall
  • Create a 'wellness booklet' with tips to help empower positive mental health.

AFSW Day 6/7 - Homework

  • Spot the Danger worksheets
  • Visit the AgriKids’ ‘Gamezone’ for touch screen games
  • Design a farm safety poster of your own.
  • Write a farm safe themed story.
